Playing Limit HoldEm
These days, with the ever popular no-limit genre of Hold’em dominating the airwaves and card rooms, people seem to have all but forgotten the once classic staple of poker: Limit Hold’em. We sometimes get asked, “What’s the point of playing limit poker?”
The reply is short and sweet: “Money.” Assuming you don’t hate money, and perhaps even enjoy winning at things, playing limit can be a huge tool in building a bankroll.
Although less glamorous than many other variations of poker, limit Hold’em is an effective teacher. You will learn discipline, patience, and hand reading. And it isn’t like there is no gamble or variance in it. It is still, after all, poker.
- Limit poker lends itself to a consistent, gradual increase of your bankroll. Unlike more popular variations – such as no-limit Hold’em – you can’t loose everything in front of you in one bet. If you can consistently make correct decisions while playing limit poker, over time, you will consistently build your free poker bankroll.
- In no-limit poker, a player, even when she has made a good bet, can lose half of her bankroll in one bad beat! A bad beat is where she made the right decision, but the luck of poker went against her. In the short run, bad beats can have an impact on your bankroll. In the long run, you start a bankroll and build a bankroll without worrying about bad beats.
- You will find that competition in online limit Hold’em rooms is weaker than in no-limit games. When no-limit became the rage, people learned the game and got significantly better. Limit poker was seen as boring in the online poker world. First, it isn’t true that it’s boring. Second, you can make money off of this misconception.
If you’re looking to build a huge bankroll, only to see it exponentially diminish after a string of bad beats, no-limit Hold’em may just be what you’re looking for.
If you’re looking to grind out a respectable bankroll, however, do the following: play tight poker, stay within your limits, limit your losses, then play limit poker. If you are the type of player who can consistently make good choices on the felt and play better poker than your opponents, limit holdem is your game. And if you aren’t that person yet, you can become him (or her).
